Jeannine Uzel
Director of Music and Organist

Email: [email protected]

Jeannine began studying piano at age 7 and at age 13 found her Roman Catholic church in need of an organist so she began her organ career playing for the Saturday 5 pm and 7:30 am Sunday masses at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic church in Colonial Heights.  She has studied with private teachers since that time and in 1998 was in the first graduating class of the Leadership Program for Musicians Serving Small Congregations (LPM) in the Diocese of Virginia.

Jeannine has primarily served Episcopal congregations since 1994 and is a long-serving substitute with the Richmond AGO chapter and has supported various denominations in the Richmond, Hanover, and Northern Neck regions.

Jeannine is always looking for musicians who enjoy enriching the worship at Varina Episcopal Church.  If you play and instrument or sing, please feel free to contact her.  She would love to have you enhance our Sunday worship!

Karey Sitzler
Director of Children's Music

Email: [email protected]

Karey Sitzler holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education with emphasis in Strings from Western Michigan University and a Master of Music in String Performance Pedagogy from Arizona State.  She was raised in a musical family as the youngest of 4 children who were always, along with their parents, involved in church choirs. Piano lessons began at 4 because she wanted to be like her siblings but her grandfather moved in in 1963 and brought his violin. This began her long love for string music. As a vocalist, Karey studied voice at Western Michigan with retired Metropolitan Opera soprano, Marcella Faustman. Primarily a violist, she has performed with professional symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras and chamber ensembles in Michigan, Indiana, Arizona, Ohio, and now Virginia for over 40 years on viola, violin, and cello. She also plays guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, bouzouki, and ukulele.  She has taught string classes and private lessons to students ages 4-adult at beginning to university/conservatory levels, and taught in school music programs for 45 years.

Karey and her husband Tommy love serving as church musicians. Karey has been writing music for worship for choir, solo, and children for most of her life.  She and Tommy and their band, All In His Name, have traveled around Virginia to help to lead music for church services, coffee houses, and community events.  Karey also served as children music coordinator in Chelsea Michigan, Butler Indiana, and as VBS music leader in Portsmouth where she wrote songs for the group. She directed Adult church choirs over 20 years in Michigan, Indiana, and Arizona.
